Until the mid-20th century, before Fort Bay was enlarged as a port, everything – from supplies to the Queen – was hauled up to The Bottom via the Ladder, more than 800 steps hard-carved into the rock on the island's west coast. Panoramic views aside, there's not much here now other than an abandoned customs house halfway along the 800m-long route.
Budget about 90 minutes for the round trip.
Snorkeling is possible in the bay when the weather's calm.
