Welcome to Tana River
The Tana River delta is regarded by most travellers as an inconvenient stretch of road between Malindi and Lamu. But there are some fantastic areas of exploration here for intrepid travellers. The delta country is a long, low marshland dotted with domes of jungle sprouting over a wet prairie. Cooking smoke from the thin houses of the nomadic Orma cattle herders and the mud-and-thatch huts of the Pokomo fishermen floats over the sedge, while black herons flap over the slow water. In the tall grass, hippos and crocodiles warily circle one another. This is one of those parts of Kenya where hippos are a viable traffic hazard! It's also prime dhow-building turf; huge boats have been conceived and built here.
There is very little in the way of organised tourism here, besides a small coastal conservancy, some very basic accommodation in Kipini village and the remote luxury Delta Dunes lodge.
