The star attraction at Roppongi Hills is Mori Art Museum, a center for contemporary art popular with both locals and visitors. It shares the top floors of Mori Tower with an observatory, Tokyo City View. Other reasons to visit include the popular cinema and huge selection of eateries.
Mori Art Museum & Tokyo City View
Mori Art Museum (MAM) is Tokyo's largest space for contemporary art, staging several blockbuster shows each year. These have included retrospectives of prominent Japanese artists, such as Takashi Murakami, Yayoi Kusama and Makoto Aida; there have also been thought-provoking exhibitions, covering themes like AI, urbanism and climate change. Every three years, the museum puts on "Roppongi Crossing," an exhibition of up-and-coming artists.
In addition to the main exhibition, MAM has three smaller spaces (including one for film) spotlighting more experimental work. Admission includes entry to Tokyo City View, which has views from 250m (750ft); it's especially good for spotting Tokyo Tower.
Hanging Out at Roppongi Hills
Roppongi Hills' other big attraction is its state-of-the-art movie theater, Toho Cinemas Roppongi Hills. In addition to getting all the big new releases, movies are screened past midnight and you can order wine and beer from the concession stand. Elsewhere in the mall, there are multiple food halls with options ranging from fast food to Michelin-starred. All of this makes Roppongi Hills a popular destination for that classic night out – dinner and a movie.
