At 634m, Tokyo Skytree (東京スカイツリー) is the tallest tower in Japan and a majestic symbol of the city. It functions mainly as a telecommunications and broadcasting tower, but the observation decks offer sweeping views of the entire metropolis of Tokyo and beyond, and there’s enough to do here to fill up a whole day.
A Bird’s-Eye View of Tokyo
There are two observation decks on Tokyo Skytree: one at 350m and another at 450m. It costs extra to access both, but the view of Sumida River snaking across the metropolis you get from the 450m above ground is worth the price. The best time to go is just before sunset – head up while it’s light to see Tokyo in all its glory, then watch the city lights turn on as the sun creeps below the horizon. There’s also a bar and cafe to sit in and admire the views.
Family-Friendly Fun
Pair your trip to the observation deck with a stop at Tokyo Solamachi, the mall attached to Tokyo Skytree. Apart from shops (over 300 mostly midrange Japanese and international brands) and restaurants, the Sumida Aquarium, Postal Museum, a planetarium and a host of other attractions are also within the building. However, if you only have time for a quick stop, head to the 4th floor where you’ll find the Pokémon Centre, Kirby Café, and shops that carry Japan-exclusive products and cool souvenirs to take home, like plastic food models and handcrafted knives.
