Built in 1930 in a combination of Hindu and Islamic styles, and graciously reflected in the Rudra Sagar Lake, single-story Neermahal stretches across an island and can only be reached by boat. The palace is now empty but it's easy to imagine it once brimming with royal festivities.
Opt for a day trip to Neermahal (₹30, small boat round trip ₹400, ₹50 each on faster big boat), and en route you’ll pass through a coddled landscape of terraced fields, wrapped round small hills of rubber trees (Tripura is second only to Kerala in rubber production). It makes for a picturesque landscape – if an unlikely setting for a floating palace.
On the return to Agartala, detour to Udaipur for another connection with royalty. This was once the capital of the Tripura kingdom and the area is dotted with ancient temples and tanks.
