The five-level modern structure of the Shanghai Urban Planning Exhibition Hall (上海城市规划展示馆, Shànghǎi Chéngshì Guīhuà Zhǎnshìguǎn, 100 Renmin Ave, 人民大道100号西藏中路入口) traces the city’s architectural development, from muddy settlement on the Haungpu River to futuristic metropolis. It does so through giant models, interactive multimedia displays and historic photos; the highlight is a striking scale model of downtown Shanghai, occupying a whole room with every building over six stories high represented, plus a 360-degree virtual tour of Shanghai.
The 1st floor depicts the city’s early development, from its colonial settlers on the Bund to the distinctive shíkùmén (stone-gate houses) that can be found throughout the city. On the 4th floor, visitors can get a peek into the future and see what plans the authorities have for Shanghai for the rest of the 21st century. Stop by the small 5th-floor cafe for glorious views over People’s Park. Audio guides are available in English, French, German, Russian, Spanish, Korean and Japanese.
Upon exiting you'll find yourself in "Old Shanghai Street," a recreation of 1930s Shanghai, complete with vintage cars, historical photographs and a cobblestone walkway that leads to a modern underground shopping plaza.
