For a superb introduction to the Islamic world, visit the Sharjah Museum of Islamic Civilization (sharjahmuseums.ae; adult/child Dhs10/5), which has more than 5000 artifacts to peruse. Two floors occupy a converted souq, with a gorgeous curved roof and mosaics in the central atrium.
Different galleries display items related to the Islamic faith (see old Qurans and learn about the Hajj, the pilgrimage to Mecca), beautifully detailed pottery, metalwork, woodcarvings and manuscripts, plus weapons and textiles. Step into the science and technology room for interactive exhibitions on mathematics and astronomy used in the Arab world. See an armillary sphere, used to observe stars and planets, and turn the water-wheel model for an example of innovative engineering. The roasting jack was developed in the 16th century and used to rotate a heavy piece of meat via crank and tooth. Look out for the Saturday drop-in workshops, with hands-on activities for children.
The museum is open from 8am to 8pm from Saturday to Thursday, and 4pm to 8pm on Friday.
