Hikkaduwa Lake, which teems with birds and super-sized monitor lizards, makes for a calming excursion away from the busy beach strip. Speak to your hotel or local travel agencies about arranging a boat trip. To reach the lake turn off Baddegama Rd as the town starts to thin out, just after the pedestrian crossing, and follow the brick-paved track, then Lane 3 (or take a three-wheeler for Rs 300).
