Born Centre de Cultura i Memòria

Originally launched for the tercentenary of the Catalan defeat in the War of the Spanish Succession (in 1714), this cultural space is housed in the former 19th-century Mercat del Born, designed by Catalan architect Josep Fontserè. Excavations in 2001 unearthed remains of whole streets (now exposed on the subterranean level) flattened to make way for the much-hated Ciutadella (citadel), along with necropolises from Roman and Islamic times. The building is free to access, or join a 90-minute guided tour among the ruins.
