The tranquil Parque El Olivar, a veritable oasis in the middle of San Isidro, comprises 1500 olive trees, some as old as 400 years.. A 15-minute walk north from Huaca Pucllana, the olive grove is part of a serene 10-hectare public space that sprung from just a few olive saplings brought to Peru from Spain in 1560.
By the early 19th century the park’s population of olive trees grew to over 3000; however, many were cut down by pouty Spanish settlers in light of Peru’s independence in 1821. Declared a National Monument, the park has a children’s library and is a natural habitat for tanagers, hawks and other winged creatures.
