The northern Amazon Basin fanning out from Iquitos is home to the Amazon River (Río Amazonas) itself. Should you so choose, you can follow this waterway all the way through to Brazil and on again to the Atlantic.
The way to experience the jungle here is to take a tour from Iquitos for a minimum of three days, staying out in one of the many wilderness lodges.
Heading upriver (southwest from Iquitos) you encounter the wilderness reserve of Reserva Nacional Pacaya-Samiria. Heading downriver (east from Iquitos) on the Río Amazonas takes you toward the border with Colombia and Brazil, and possible continuation on a river voyage all the way down to the Atlantic.
