Maison de la Canne

This museum occupies the site of an old sugar refinery and rum distillery, and tells the fascinating and sad story of Martinique through the history of the slave trade, colonialism and eventual emancipation. Inside the main building are period photos and items such as the Code Noir, which outlined appropriate conduct between slaves and their owners. Displays are in French and English, though the English texts are significantly less detailed than the French ones.
