Miniatur Wunderland (miniatur-wunderland.de; adult/child €20/12.50; hours vary) might sound like a kitschy tourist attraction, but it's actually very cool. Even the worst cynics are quickly transformed into fans of this vast miniature world that goes on and on. The model trains wending their way through the Alps are impressive, but slightly predictable. But when you see a model A380 swoop out of the sky and land at the fully functional model of Hamburg’s airport, you can’t help but gasp!
Especially impressive is how day changes to night with a simulative transition comprising over 300,000 LEDs illuminating scenes in sync (every 15 minutes). Much of Miniatur Wunderland is also interactive, inviting you to push buttons to launch planes, start windmills and so on.
