One of Europe’s most fashion-forward cities is hosting a huge tribute to the life and works of design icon Gianni Versace.
In what the organisers describe as “the most spectacular exhibition ever” and “the largest exhibition of Gianni Versace‘s original craft ever seen,” countless pieces of the iconic designer’s work have been brought together at the Kronprinzenpalais on Berlin’s iconic Unter Den Linden for visitors to admire. The exhibition is broken down into themes, with one room dedicated to black and gold designs, and others showing clothes worn by Madonna, Prince and the tailcoat worn by Sting on his wedding day. Many of his designs were made famous by supermodels like Linda Evangalista and Naomi Campbell throughout the 1980s and 1990s.
Fans of the famous fashion designer are treated to an eclectic collection of clothing, accessories and home furnishings that captivated the world in Versace’s heyday, in the heart of a city he loved. There is even a reproduction of his bedroom from Versace’s famous Miami-Mansion.
Speaking to Tagesspiegel, exhibition curator Sabina Albano said: “Berlin is a place of innovation, Gianni Versace goes well with this city, because it was always ahead of its time. He was bold, a visionary.” Collector Antonio Caravano added: “We both felt the need to remember him now, twenty years after Gianni Versace's death.”
Exhibiting this magnificent collection in Germany seems particularly pertinent as Gianni’s first ever fashion show was held in 1978 in the small city of Lippstadt. The exhibition begins as TV fans eagerly await the new series of American Crime Story, which will focus on the 1997 murder of the designer on the steps of his home in Miami.
