Beneath Dupont Circle’s traffic-clogged streets sits one of Washington’s strangest cultural spaces: a repurposed underground streetcar station transformed into an experimental arts venue. Dupont Underground occupies 15,000 sq ft of abandoned tunnels and platforms, hosting rotating exhibitions, installations, performances and immersive events.
The rough concrete walls and cavernous spaces give exhibitions a raw atmosphere in contrast to the polished Smithsonian galleries. One visit might feature digital projection art; another could spotlight emerging local photographers or multimedia installations from international artists.
Dupont Underground's mission strongly centers on independent creators, BIPOC artists and unconventional work that may not fit traditional museums. Finding the entrance beside the Dupont Starbucks almost feels like discovering a secret passageway into another version of Washington.
