Trek Mount Kilimanjaro through Marangu Route

DAY 1: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut, Elevation (ft): 6,046 ft to 8,858 ftYou shall be collected from your Moshi Hotel 8:00AM , depart Moshi for Marangu Gate for the necessary formalities before beginning our trek. The hiking trail begins by ascending a beautiful, tropical rain forest. At the upper edge of the forest line, we have the opportunity to see blue monkeys. The trail then widens to expose beautiful hillsides until we reach Mandara Hut.  DAY 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut, Elevation (ft): 8,858 ft to 12,205 ftWe start the day continuing through the forest until the trail opens into high moorland. We may get our first views of Kibo and Mawenzi peaks - two of the three volcanic peaks that make up the summit of Kilimanjaro. DAY 3: Horombo Hut to Mawenzi Ridge , Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 14,400 ftThis is an extra day meant for acclimatization and can be spent day hiking on Mawenzi Ridge. The unique landscape offers motivating views of Kibo and Mawenzi. After spending a few moments exploring the area we head back to Horombo Hut. DAY 4:Horombo Hut to Kibo HutWe climb gradually, then cross the lunar desert of the “Saddle” between Mawenzi and Kibo. Our camp, Kibo Hut, sits at the bottom of the Kibo crater wall. Once here we rest, enjoy an early dinner to prepare for the summit day.DAY 5 : Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak  Elevation (ft): 15,430 ft to 19,341 ft Distance: 6 km/4 miles Hiking Time: 6-8 hours Habitat: Arctic Uhuru Peak to Horombo Hut Elevation (ft): 19,341 ft to 12,250 ft Distance: 16 km/10 miles Hiking Time: 4-5 hours Habitat: Heath Very early in the morning (around midnight), we begin our push to the summit. This is the most mentally and physically challenging portion of the trek. The wind and cold at this elevation and time of day can be extreme. We ascend in the darkness for several hours while taking frequent, but short, breaks. At Gilman’s point (18,600 ft), you will be rewarded with the most magnificent sunrise you are ever likely to see coming over Mawenzi Peak. Finally, we arrive at Uhuru Peak- the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the continent of Africa. After spending a few moments taking in the plains of Africa and your accomplishment, we descend to Horombo Hut. Later in the evening, we enjoy our last dinner on the mountain and a well-earned sleep. DAY 6Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate Elevation (ft): 12,205 ft to 6,046 ft Distance: 20 km/12 miles Hiking Time: 5-7 hours Habitat: Rain Forest On our last day, we have a long trek mostly downhill through the tropical rainforest. Once at the park headquarters at Marangu gate, we collect our summit certificates.

This is where the going really gets tough. The first section of the trail consists of a rocky path to the Hans Meyer Cave (5150m), also a good resting spot. The path then zigzags up to Gillman's point (5 681m), which is located on the crater rim. This section is very steep with a lot of stone scree, requiring a great physical and mental effort. Probably the most demanding section of the entire route. Do the Kili shuffle and move slowly. From Gillman's Point you will normal Day sixHorombo hut (at 3720m) to Marangu Gate (at 1980m) Hiking time: 6h Distance: Approximately 27 kms After breakfast you continue your descent (6 hours), passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate. It is strongly recommended not to pay your porters any tips until you and all your gear have reached the gate safely.. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. This is also where successful climbers receive their summit certificates. Those climbers who reached Gillman's Point (5685m) are issued with green certificates and those who reached Uhuru Peak (5895m) receive gold certificates.

5 Day Kilimanjaro Climbing Marangu Route Trekking

Day 1: Transfer from Moshi town to Marangu Gate (1980m) - Mandara hut (2700m)After breakfast you will be getting a briefing of your hiking from Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro guides before been transfer to Marangu gate. After all the formality you now leave the park office and ascend on a cleared ridge route through the rain forest. The forest covered with mist and saturated with beards of moss. This trail follows the edge of a stream through the undergrowth and offers you the option to rejoin the main trail either, after one and half hours hiking, you will reach Mandara hut. Day 2: Mandara hut (2700m) - Horombo hut (3720m) After your breakfast you will starts climbing towards Horombo hut with your picnic lunch. From Mandara hut the trail passes through a short stretch of forest, and then heads around the base of the Maundi Crater where you will leave the forest and enter the moorland. We recommend you take a short detour up to the rim of the Maundi Crater from here you see the impressive Kibo Crater, and on a clear day you will also be able to see the glaciers of Kibo. Day 3: Horombo Hut (3720m) - Kibo Hut (4700m)The climb is becoming more difficult as the oxygen at these altitudes begins to thin out considerably. To begin today you can take one of the two trails to the “Saddle”, located between the peaks of Mawenzi and Kibo. Stick to the lower route, which is much easier and has the added benefit of taking you past the last watering point. You should stock up with all the water you will need the next watering point will be at Horombo hut when you return there on your descent the night after next. Once again remember to take it slowly and drink enough water. It will take from 5 to 7 hours to reach Kibo Hut where you will rest and have dinner. Day 4: Kibo hut (4700 m) - Uhuru Peak (5895 m) - Horombo hut (3720 m) Today will by far be your toughest day, you will be woken just before midnight and soon head off into the cold night up a rocky path towards to the Hans Meyer Cave at 5150 metres you may take a short rest here before continuing your ascent up to Gillman’s point at 5680 metres. Probably the most demanding section of the entire route as it is very steep and stony go slowly and carefully here. From Gillman’s Point, you will more than likely be walking through snow for the next 2 hours, when you will finally reach the summit of Uhuru Peak at 5895 metres. Day 5: Horombo hut (3720 m) – Mandara hut (1980m) - Marangu GateAfter an early you continue your descent passing the Mandara hut, down to the Marangu gate this will take the best part of six hours. At Marangu gate you sign your name and details in a register. To make your achievement official, you will receive a summit certificate.

5 Days Kilimanjaro Trekking - Marangu Route

Day one: Marangu Gate to Mandara Hut - The Kilimanjaro mountain is Africa's highest mountain and the world's tallest free-standing mountain at 5895 meters above sea level. It has three major volcanic centres which are Shira (4160 m), snow-capped Kibo (5895 m), and Mawenzi. For the Marangu route you will be ascending to the top.Day two: Mandara to Horombo - Trek from Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut at an altitude of 3700 m. This should take you 3-4 hours. After about 15 minutes, you will leave the glades of the rain forest and follow an ascending path on the open moorlands to the Horombo encampment. You will get amazing views of Mawenzi and the summit of Kibo. Look out for giant senecio and lobelias. You may start to feel the effects of the altitude today.Day three: Horombo Hut (acclimatization day) 3700M - Today is considered optional since it starts and ends at Horombo Hut, however it is an important day for acclimatization that will increase your chances of reaching the summit. Today you can rest at the camp or have a day trek to Zebra Rocks (4200m) and Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4300m). You will be returning to Horombo Hut for overnight.Day four: Summit and Horombo - Very early in the morning (midnight to 2am), begin the climb to the summit on steep and heavy scree or snow up to Gilman's point located on the crater rim at 18640 ft/5861 m (4-5 hours). Continue to ascend to Uhuru Peak which is the highest point in Africa: 19340 ft / 5895 m (1-2 hours). You will find unbelievable views at every turn. Get your picture taken at the summit. From here, we now begin the descent, stopping for lunch and a rest at Kibo before continuing to Horombo encampment for dinner and overnight (3-4 hours). Day five: Back to Moshi - After breakfast, a steady descent takes you down through moorland to Mandara Hut (2700m / 8858 ft). The first stopping place will be at the Marangu Route. Continue descending through lush forest on a good path to the National Park gate at Marangu (1830 m / 6004 ft). At lower elevations, it can be wet and muddy, gaiters and trekking poles will help. Shorts and t-shirts will probably be plenty to wear (keep rain gear and warmer clothing handy).

A 6-Day Excursion to Mount Kilimanjaro via the Marangu Route

DAY 1 MARANGU GATE (5,900 ft.) ~ MANDARA HUT (8,860 ft.)Departure from Arusha at 8am, about 2 hours to Marangu village. Once you arrive at the gate, and after completion of administrative formalities and meeting with porters and guides, begin the 4 to 5 hour walk to Mandara Hut. The walk is at a leisurely pace through a dense and humid forest to the hut. If you feel up to it at day’s end, walk to the nearby Maundi crater for a long view over the plains & Lake Jipe, and in the distance; the Pare and Usambara mountains. The night is spent inside one of the huts.DAY 2 MANDARA HUT ~ HOROMBO HUT (12,200 ft.)After about 45 minutes in the forest, you will suddenly arrive upon an area of high grasses of the heather belt, which as the trek continues, becomes increasingly desert-like, into the moorland. About 5 to 6 hours of walking brings you to Horombo Hut, and a stunning view of Mawenzi Peak. Night will be spent in one of the huts.DAY 3 HOROMBO HUT ~ ACCLIMITIZATION DAY This extra day is taken at Horombo Hut to help your body’s acclimatization, and also to witness the beautiful scenery. There is a trek to the base of Mawenzi, at nearly 15,000 feet , along the way passing Zebra Rock, and the striking landscape of the moorland zone.DAY 4 HOROMBO HUT ~ KIBO HUT (15,430 ft.)The day’s trekking will last about 6 to 7 hours. You will trek across the exposed, barren alpine desert of the saddle between Kibo and Mawenzi. The last fresh water point is at 14,100 ft., where it will be necessary to fill your water bottles. The porters will carry the rest of the water required for food and hot beverages. The saddle crossing is impressive and the landscape spectacular. Night spent at Kibo Hut.DAY 5 KIBO HUT ~ UHURU PEAK (19,340 ft.) ~ HOROMBO HUT (12,200 ft.)You will be woken early with a steaming cup of coffee or tea, and the departure will be between 12:30 to 1am. The temperatures range from just below freezing at midnight, to between 10 deg. F to –10 F. just before dawn at Gilman’s point, at about (18,652 ft.) on the crater rim. After about 6 hours of walking, you will come to the edge of the crater, near the Ratzel Glacier. Once reaching Gillman’s Point, summon your strength for another 1.5 hour trek over a gentle slope around the edge of the crater rim to the high point; Uhuru Peak, at (19,340 ft.). After a short time at the summit, descend the steep scree trail back to Kibo Hut for some rest, then descend further to Horombo Hut for the night.DAY 6 HOROMBO HUT ~ MARANGU GATE (5,900 ft) ~ ARUSHA Descend straight to the gate of Marangu, which will take about 6 hours of walking. On arrival at the gate you will have lunch, and then will be transferred to Arusha. Transfer back to Arusha for a much-welcomed shower!
