A Nation in the Making
The museum’s five steel towers, inspired by falcon wings, double as thermal chimneys, drawing hot air upward and cooling the galleries below. From a distance they appear to be sculptural, but up close they frame views across Saadiyat Island and the Gulf.
Start your visit in Al Masar Garden, a 600m outdoor gallery that roots the story in desert, oasis and coastal landscapes. Inside, six permanent galleries move from prehistoric archaeological finds – some dating back 300,000 years – to the formation of the modern UAE. Artifacts, immersive exhibits and contemporary installations trace how geography, trade routes and belief systems shaped communities in the area long before the formation of the country.
The Founding Father
The most affecting rooms are those dedicated to Sheikh Zayed, the founder of the UAE. The galleries explore his environmental vision, diplomatic pragmatism and emphasis on education. His story unfolds alongside that of the seven emirates, emphasizing the negotiation and cooperation that led to federation in 1971. One of the region’s most inclusive cultural spaces, there are reduced-sensory sessions, tactile displays, sensory maps and Emirati sign language tours.
