Irish-Greek immigrant Lafcadio Hearn (aka Koizumi Yakumo; 1850–1904) became one of the foremost interpreters of Japanese culture for the outside world. He lived in Kumamoto from 1891 to 1894, in this house dating from 1877.

The building is behind Tsuruya department store.
