This dramatic citadel, strengthened by the architect Vauban between 1683 and 1689, dominates the little port of Le Palais. Inside, the informative Musée d'Art et d'Histoire displays concentrate on the history of the island's defensive system, and there are sections on the local fishing trade and island life. There's also a very smart 55-room hotel here and a restaurant (menus €19 to €35).
