As you're walking through Bute Park, look for the outline of the foundations of 13th-century Blackfriars Priory. It was destroyed in 1404, when Owain Glyndŵr attacked Cardiff, and was later rebuilt, only to be finally vacated in 1538 when the monasteries were dissolved.
