These government-protected rocky islands about an hour’s boat ride off the coast of Sawadi are rich in marine life and make an exciting destination for snorkelling and diving. Turtles feed off the coral gardens here and at certain times of the year can be found congregating in large numbers. Angel and parrot fish are commonly seen and colourful sea snakes are another feature of the area – though be warned, the latter are highly dangerous if disturbed.
Day trips can either be arranged through Al Sawadi Beach Resort, through Al Mouj Marina or one of the dive centres in Muscat; this includes the permit. Ad hoc camping is permissible with a 'voucher to visit' (OR1 per person payable only by credit card) from the Ministry of Environment. These vouchers are available from Al Mouj Marina or your dive centre and the instructions for use are given on the voucher. Formalities must be completed by SMS the day before use.
