Next to the airport, the International Antarctic Centre (iceberg.co.nz) is situated on the working campus of the international Antarctic programs of New Zealand, the US, Italy and South Korea, an important precinct at the heart of Christchurch's long-time role as a gateway city to the frozen continent.
Get a sense of life on the icy frontier on a bumpy ride aboard a Hägglund all-terrain amphibious Antarctic vehicle (try to secure a seat up front with the driver), experience an -18°C wind chill in the Storm Dome, or say g'day to rescue huskies and endearing little blue penguins. Warm parkas are provided for the Storm Dome, and in the 4D Theatre you'll get sensory surprises reinforcing Antarctica's chilly and windswept weather (and maybe get a bit wet). Passionate penguin fans should sign up for a Penguin Backstage Experience.
