Hurtigruten and the Start of Your Norwegian Cruise
Overview
Good morning from Svalbard! Today is your last morning on solid land, as you'll board your cruise ship later this afternoon. Before the start of this sea journey, however, you have a free day to explore Svalbard at your leisure. Need a place to start? Consider the optional hike to Blomsterdalen, during which you'll pass the exterior of the Global Seed Vault on your way back down the trail. In the summer, the sun doesn't set this far north, so, despite the cold, this valley promises plants and flowers. Whatever you do, take a moment to just be here, now, in Svalbard. You’re at a latitude over 78°N and under 1,500 kilometers from the North Pole itself. The air of this Arctic desert is fresh and pure, and summer temperatures range between zero and eight degrees Celsius thanks to a warm northern branch of the Gulf Stream. Your voyage begins from Longyearbyen around 7 p.m., so head to the port in time for your departure. Adjust to your cabin as the afternoon turns to evening — with the sun still high in the sky — and watch Longyearbyen fall into the horizon as you sail into Isfjorden.
Highlights
Hike to Blomsterdalshøgda and the Global Seed Vault (optional)
The day is entirely yours, but to make the most out of your morning in Svalbard, why not head out on a hike? Alongside your expert local guide — who will, as is customary in Svalbard, carry a rifle in case of polar bear sightings — you'll hike to Blomsterdalshøgda overlooking the Adventfjord. At 321 meters above sea level, the mountain boasts native plants and flowers every summer, while in winter, it yields a world of rock, snow, and ice. On your way back from the mountain's stunning vistas, you'll pass by the outside of the world-famous Global Seed Vault, which preserves an incredible array of species.
Hurtigruten Cruise and Cuisine
As your ship's journey begins this evening, you'll have time to settle in at your leisure, making the most of the midnight sun's endless daylight and tucking in to your ship's high-end dining options. Hurtigruten sources ingredients from local producers to bring the flavors of your environment directly to your plate.
