Fjord Views and City Culture in Stavanger
Overview
You'll awaken today with views of the beautiful Lysefjord. This 26-mile fjord houses not only storybook views but also one of Norway’s most famous sights: Preikestolen, or Pulpit Rock. This landmark towers nearly 2,000 feet above the fjord’s shimmering waters, creating an utterly ethereal landscape you'll have plenty of time to gaze at this morning. As you cruise through the fjord, you'll also notice Kjerag mountain, at the fjord's end. Keep an eye out for curious mountain goats in the horizon, cascading waterfalls, and, crucially, the famous Kjeragbolten, a glacial boulder that's wedged high up in a crevasse. From one fantastic landscape to another, you'll then spend the remainder of today in Stavanger, a colorful waterside city with an international ambience and lively cultural scene. You'll have your pick of optional tours, should you want to dig deeper into this area's innumerable charms. Among the options, you'll have the chance to discover the architectural relics of Old Stavanger, which include Northern Europe’s best-preserved collection of wooden houses and Norway’s oldest cathedral, which dates back to the 12th century. There's also a Viking-themed tour for a different angle on Norway's history. Beyond these guided tours, you can always use the remainder of today's free time to set off on an adventure of your own curation. Visit the Norwegian Petroleum Museum, browse local boutiques, and cap off the day with a hot beverage on the waterfront.
Highlights
On the Trail of the Vikings (optional)
On this optional three-hour excursion, your expert local guide will lead you in the footsteps of warriors at the interactive Viking House center. From there, you'll visit the Swords in Rock monument, the site of one of Norway’s most significant battlegrounds, and pay a visit to a mystical stone circle. When else can you inhabit a world of the past?
Walking Tour in the Old Town of Stavanger (optional)
Get to know Stavanger on this two-and-a-half-hour tour, during which your expert local guide will elucidate the nuances of this historic village. On the west side of the harbor, the area consists of 173 wooden buildings from the turn of the 18th century — the best-preserved collection in all of Northern Europe. As you stroll among the cobbled streets, you'll learn about Stavanger’s industrial history, and, after visiting the main attractions of Valberg Tower and Fargegaten, you'll pause at a local cafe for a hot beverage and Norway's traditional hjertevafler, a heart-shaped waffle.
