Basilica di Santa Cecilia in Trastevere

The last resting place of the patron saint of music is said to be built on the site of her house, and you can visit the Roman excavations below the church. Inside the church, Stefano Maderno's mysterious sculpture depicts St Cecilia's body apparently exactly as it was when it was unearthed in the Catacombs of San Callisto in 1599. You can also see Pietro Cavallini's exquisite 13th-century fresco in the nuns' choir of the hushed convent adjoining the church.
