More than 5000 varieties of subarctic plants fill the city's botanic gardens (grasagardur.is; free), delivering a wealth of colorful seasonal flowers and plenty of birdlife, particularly gray geese and their fluffy little goslings. The garden aims to help visitors understand the variety of flora that can flourish even in northern climates where harsh conditions are common. An alpine garden shows off perennials and bushes from the world’s mountain ranges. Don’t miss the rose garden or wonderful summer cafe, Café Flóra.
