Opposite the Bank of England stands porticoed Mansion House (cityoflondon.gov.uk), the official residence of the Lord Mayor of London since 1752. Built by George Dance the Elder, its magnificent interiors include an impressive art collection and the awe-inspiring Egypt room, with its tall columns supporting a narrow attic area. The room isn’t "Egyptian" at all and is only called this because it was inspired by Roman architecture in Egypt. Tours of Mansion House take place every Tuesday, leaving from the porch entrance on Walbrook.
