Opened as an independent charity by controversial Iraqi-British advertising mogul Charles Saatchi, who championed British artists such as Damien Hirst, Tracey Emin, Sarah Lucas and Gavin Turk, the contemporary Saatchi Gallery (saatchigallery.com) off the King’s Road remains a notable place to celebrate young modern artists. It showcases experimental and topical works in all mediums.
Previous exhibits include the Beyond the Streets graffiti show featuring 100 international artists, the America in Crisis show featuring poignant photographs from the 1960s to now and the Want the World to Know exhibition by Michael Forbes, with punch-packing sculptures covering issues such as racial politics and migration.
Exhibitions rotate regularly over three floors in the 70,000 sq ft space occupying the Duke of York's Headquarters. Repeat events include London’s Rare Book Fair, which occupies the whole gallery for a week in spring. While there are no longer permanent shows, the terrific shop is a mainstay, and a chance to get an original piece or print.
