If restricted time or funds mean that you can only ski one resort in Banff, choose Sunshine. Its 13.6-sq-km ski area is divided between 137 runs and the 6-hectare Rogers Terrain Park. With such a huge area, the resort can comfortably handle several thousand skiers and still feel relatively uncrowded. It boasts the country's first heated chairlifts, too.

All the runs are at high elevations (over 2133m), so snow conditions are nearly always reliable on the three mountains (Lookout, Standish and Goat’s Eye). It’s also unusual in that it only needs to manufacture a small amount of snow every year: snow pack in good years can be up to 9m. The downside: it can be windy and cold.

Sunshine is only around 15km from downtown Banff, so many ski packages use off-mountain accommodations and employ shuttle buses to get you up to the resort. If you prefer to be closer to the snow, Sunshine also has Banff’s only ski-in, ski-out hotel at the Sunshine Mountain Lodge.
