Walking in Salzburg

Rising sheer and rugged above the city, 540m Mönchsberg commands photogenic views over the domes and spires of the Altstadt on one side, and of the fortress perched high on the hill on the other. Trails head out in all directions.

Arguably the most scenic trail is the 4km panoramic walking track from Stift Nonnberg to Augustiner Bräustübl, taking in Festung Hohensalzburg and Museum der Moderne en route and affording views deep into the Austrian and Bavarian Alps. This trail is gentle enough to appeal to families, with ample shade in summer.

To get to the top, take the Mönchsberg Lift.
