Like Queensland Museum Kurilpa, the adjacent Queensland Art Gallery (QAG; qagoma.qld.gov.au; free) is also part of South Bank's Queensland Cultural Centre.
Opened in 1982 as the first major structure of the newly established cultural precinct – the museum's brutalist building followed a few years later in 1986 – QAG features a fine permanent collection, mostly of domestic artists. This includes works by Australian heavyweights like Sir Sidney Nolan, Russell Drysdale, Arthur Boyd, Charles Blackman, William Dobell, Margaret Olley and Howard Arkley. The gallery also has works by international artists including Picasso, Degas and van Dyck.
A diverse collection of Indigenous Australian works features paintings and pottery by artists from the Hermannsburg School art movement. Highlights include vivid and vibrant landscapes by the great Albert Namatjira, the first Indigenous person to be granted conditional Australian citizenship in 1957.
