Gallery of Modern Art

Interior of The Gallery of Modern Art in CBD, Brisbane, Australia.

Adjacent to the Queensland Art Gallery is the conjoined Gallery of Modern Art (GOMA; qagoma.qld.gov.au; free). Opened in 2006 and constructed in glass and black metal, it's a striking architectural counterpoint to QAG's hulking amalgam of concrete and cement. Inside the gallery, relaxing pools create a calm and Zen-influenced vibe.

One of Brisbane's must-see cultural institutions celebrates modern and contemporary art, with a particular emphasis on Australian, Asian and Pacific artists. Regularly changing exhibitions spotlight everything from painting, sculpture and photography to video and installation art, while GOMA's Australian Cinémathèque screens unique, often rare films and video several times weekly. The gallery also includes a Children's Art Centre, a well-stocked book-and-design shop, and both a casual cafe and a smarter bistro with river views.

Guided experiences ($95 per person) incorporating QAG, GOMA and lunch at GOMA Bistro can be booked online for specific Tuesdays and Fridays. Confirming seven days prior is essential.
