Cascades Female Factory Historic Site

The UNESCO World Heritage–listed Cascades Female Factory Historic Site (femalefactory.org.au; adult/child admission $35/20, 1hr tour $40/22) in South Hobart was where female convicts were incarcerated and put to work in vile conditions. Around 12,500 women were transported to Tasmania, and during its peak years of operation between 1828 and 1856, the Female Factory could hold up to 1200 women. Admission includes a 45-minute guided tour of the hauntingly spare yards with their interpretive installations; or book a one-hour themed Notorious Strumpets and Dangerous Girls tour, telling the tales of seven resilient convict women.
