Salamanca Arts Centre

Facade of the Salamanca Arts Centre in Hobart, capital city of Tasmania, Australia.

Running since 1975 and occupying seven Salamanca warehouses, the Salamanca Arts Centre (salarts.org.au; free) is a vital hub of Hobart's artistic life, maintaining a hectic program of launches, events and performances – always as progressive and socially inclusive as they are creative. There are dozens of commercial artists' studios, retail spaces, cafes and galleries here. Don't miss Handmark Gallery for exquisite ceramics, glass, jewelry, paintings and sculpture; the Salamanca Wool Shop for nice knits; the Kudelka Shop, home to works by mildly anarchic local cartoonist Jon Kudelka; and a coffee at Tricycle Cafe & Bar.
