Around 50km east of Launceston, Ben Lomond National Park (parks.tas.gov.au; day pass per person/vehicle $24/48) is Tasmania's only alpine resort, offering its most reliable (albeit not very reliable) skiing. Ben Lomond Snow Sports (tasmania.ski), at the foot of the ski slopes, has lodge accommodation and offers lessons and equipment hire. Snow coverage can be patchy, but the ski season generally runs from early July to late September. Three "snow guns" top up the natural snow. Downhill skiing, snowboarding, cross-country skiing and tobogganing are all available when the conditions are right. See benlomond.org.au for snow reports and webcams.
The park is also popular with bushwalkers, who explore the flower-strewn mountain plateau in late spring and summer.
National parks passes are available from self-registration boxes at the entry station prior to the Carr Villa Rd turnoff and at the information booth adjacent to the Legges Tor public shelter. Cash only (or buy one online).
