A Quest for Parity: The Octavius V Catto Memorial

Unveiled in 2017 on the south side of City Hall, amazingly this is the first monument in the city dedicated to an individual Black person. A successful activist who led the battle to desegregate Philly’s public trolleys, Catto was just 32 when he was killed on election day in 1871 while rallying Black men to vote.
