Salmagundi Club

One of the oldest art clubs in the US (founded in 1871), this free-to-visit space focused on representational American art is far removed from Chelsea's flashy gallery scene. Set in a stunning 19th-century brownstone below Union Sq, the trip is worth it if only to linger in the parlor, which is decked in period decor and historic paintings.

The gallery spaces are large with a wide-ranging collection of styles and mediums, and the club offers classes and exhibitions for its members.
