Exposition Park (expositionpark.ca.gov) – or Expo Park – began as an agricultural fairground in 1872, devolved into a magnet for the down-and-out, before finally emerging as a patch of public greenery in 1913. It contains three big-time museums (the California Science Center, California African American Museum and Natural History Museum) and will soon host a Lucas Museum of Narrative Art.
The centerpiece is the grand 1923 Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum (lacoliseum.com). This vast bowl has hosted the 1932 and 1984 Summer Olympic Games, various Super Bowls, NFL teams and the USC Trojans college football team. It's due for another round of international fame in 2028 when the Olympics return to town. Guided tours (adult/child $28/22) are available.
