The Menil Collection houses over 17,000 artworks and objects, including more than 10,000 works of art, sculpture and archaeological artifacts that John and Dominique de Menil collected during their lives. The modernist building, designed by Renzo Piano, houses rotating highlights from their extraordinary collection – everything from 5000-year-old antiquities to works by Kara Walker, René Magritte and today's art stars – plus rotating exhibitions. Don't forget to also visit the Cy Twombly Gallery and the serene and meditative Rothko Chapel, annexes of the collection.
You'll recognize the names in this, one of the world's most impressive private holdings: Salvador Dali, Paul Klee, Andy Warhol, Max Ernst.... The museum's excellent bookstore is across the street. New for 2017 is the Menil Drawing Institute, dedicated to showing and studying contemporary drawings.
