Welcome to Val Poschiavo
Italian-speaking Val Poschiavo is a joy to visit. It stretches from south of the Bernina Pass (2323m) all the way to the border, just short of the Italian town of Tirano (441m), so there's a 1900-vertical-metre drop over the length of the valley. That's a big drop, at times breathtakingly steep, whether you're in a train, bus or car. The valley is hemmed in by towering peaks and at times is so narrow that the rail line runs down the middle of the road.
There's great hiking to be had in the vicinity of the pass, gorgeous little villages dotted with atmospheric buildings, and impressive engineering marvels such as the Circular Viaduct of Brusio.
