Welcome to Murten
In May 1476 the Burgundy duke Charles the Bold set off from Lausanne to besiege Murten, only to have 8000 of his men butchered or drowned in Murtensee during the Battle of Murten. Contemplate that as you swim! Today Murten is a popular domestic summer-holiday destination and a hub for the arts. It's the host city of the unique and delightful Festival of Light.
Canals link Murtensee with Lac de Neuchâtel (west) and Bielersee (north) to complete the nautical trinity that is the Drei-Seen-Land, making it possible to travel by boat, canoe or kayak from Murten, as far north as Biel-Bienne.
