Thanon Khao San is perhaps the most high-profile product of the age of independent travel, a 400m-long street that gives its name to the most famous backpacker enclave in the world. Even if they're not staying in the area, many travelers come to join the party and see for themselves why Th Khao San has been immortalized in books and movies.
On busy nights, as many as 50,000 people visit Khao San, turning the slender street into a beach-less version of the Full Moon parties on Ko Pha-Ngan. EDM pounds out and travelers sink buckets of alcohol while food stalls, hair-braiders, henna tattooists, T-shirt sellers, and touts for bars and massage parlors take up almost every inch of available space. If this sounds like your personal version of hell, no worries: there’s more to Khao San than just the street itself. The alleyways – Rambuttri, Phra Arthit and Samsen – surrounding it are the breezy bossa nova to Khao San’s insistent EDM. It’s here that you’ll find traditional wooden homes, shophouse restaurants, laid-back music venues and the majority of the area's accommodation.
Of course, Khao San wasn’t always a destination. The street itself dates back to 1892, when it was known for its rice market; in fact, khao san means "milled rice." During the 1980s, traders who visited asked to rent rooms, spurring entrepreneurial Thais to open businesses that would cater to them. This is when Khao San’s reputation as a cheap spot for accommodation was launched. Later in the 2000s, hipster Bangkokians would "rediscover" the street, opening up quirky establishments that gradually phased out the cheap hostels. Today, post-COVID, Khao San is back to a soundtrack of dueling EDM tracks and bucket drinks – proof that you can’t keep a good party down.
