Tat Kuang Si (admission 25,000K, parking 5000K) is 30km southwest of Luang Prabang and is perhaps one of Southeast Asia’s most breathtaking waterfalls. For some people, this often photographed spot of gorgeously green and turquoise cascading falls is their sole reason to visit Laos. But it's more than just pretty Instagram photos. With small hikes through the jungle, mesmerizing swimming holes, a butterfly park and bear rescue center, allow at least half a day at Tat Kuang Si for a relaxing soak.
Hike, Swim, Eat and More
From the parking lot, the entrance to Kuang Si is a long uphill walk, but they have free electric shuttles that drop you right at the gates. A boardwalk meanders through the jungle, passing several swimming holes with benches to relax and keep your belongings. Signs at each pool indicate depth and caution. Walking up, you’ll reach the dramatic main falls tumbling down several limestone ledges. For something more adventurous, hike up to the top of the falls. Throw in a hearty lunch at Carpe Diem.
Visit the Bear Rescue Centre
The non-profit Tat Kuang Si Bear Rescue Centre hosts a rescue center right at the waterfall offering a sanctuary for rescued Asiatic Black Bears, who leisurely lounge on trees and hammocks in the jungle. These bears were once held captive by poachers and traffickers who sell them for their bile. Two-hour tours (freethebears.org; adult/child US$50/$25) run twice a day at 10am and 1pm.
Explore the Butterfly Park
A Dutch couple owns a Kuang Si Butterfly Park (kuangsiwaterfalls.com; US$5-25) right before the Kuang Si falls, where you can learn a lot about the colorful insects frequenting the gardens. The park weaves through the jungle, ending at secluded natural pools and cascades free of crowds. Although the prices might seem high, it is donated to a charity that supports the health and education of local children.
