The Reykjavík Art Museum (artmuseum.is; adult/child 2430kr/free) is Iceland’s largest institution dedicated to the visual arts. It’s split across three locations. The Reykjavík Art Museum – Hafnarhús, near the waterfront in Old Reykjavík, is a marvelously restored warehouse converted into a soaring steel-and-concrete exhibition space. Browse well-curated exhibitions of cutting-edge contemporary Icelandic art, which change frequently – expect installations, videos, paintings and sculpture. And you can always count on the comic-book-style paintings of political artist Erró (Guðmundur Guðmundsson).
A ticket to the museum is valid for two other locations: Reykjavík Art Museum – Kjarvalsstaðir in Klambratún Park, an urban green space not far from the city’s core; and Reykjavík Art Museum – Ásmundarsafn in Laugardalur. They showcase painter Jóhannes Kjarval and sculptor Ásmundur Sveinsson respectively. Each building has its own architectural style, and they’re all just as interesting from the outside as they are from the inside.
