The idiosyncratic Garbatella district was originally conceived as a garden suburb for workers with low-rise apartment blocks (lotti) arranged around communal courtyards. It was subsequently co-opted by the fascist regime to house people displaced by construction projects in the city center. Typical of its trademark architectural style are the Albergo Rosso and Teatro Palladium. There are also several murals to look out for, including one, Oh My Darling Clementine near Piazza Sauli, which portrays the innkeeper after whom the neighborhood is supposedly named.
