Silver, dome-shaped natural history museum Perlan (perlan.is; adult/child 6290/4090kr) shines on top of Reykjavík’s highest hill, Öskjuhlíð, which is criss-crossed with walking and hiking paths. Inside, the Wonders of Iceland exhibits begin with a vast ice cave, 100m (328ft) long and built with 350 tonnes of snow and layers of ash from the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption and continues to the bird-nesting cliffs at Látrabjarg, and interactive rooms on volcanoes, earthquakes and glaciers.
On a clear day, the top-floor restaurant, bar and ice-cream shop slowly turns, with unobstructed 360-degree city and bay views through the glass dome and from an observation deck. You have to buy a Perlan ticket to get in.
