Old GPO Building

One of the most iconic buildings on BBD Bagh is the Old GPO (General Post Office) Building, with its central rotunda soaring nearly 40m around a statue of a lance-wielding mail runner. The building retains its original function. Left of the main post office entrance, on the south side of the building, is the Philatelic Bureau (free), exhibiting Indian stamps through the years. They explore some esoteric areas of India and Kolkata's history, including the city's love of football and a series of tiger stamps from 1973 to commemorate Indira Gandhi's Project Tiger initiative. The The Postal Museum (free) is further west. Its exhibits, which trace the pre- and post-Independence history of India's postal service, include a selection of swords issued to security officers tasked with guarding post offices.
