The spectacular finds from ongoing excavations at this archaeological site between the Standing Stones of Stenness and the Ring of Brodgar have revolutionised understanding of the neolithic in Britain. What was probably a major center of power and religion has been revealed; in use for over a millennium, the settlement had a mighty wall, a large building (a temple or palace?) and as many as 100 other structures, some painted. During the summer dig season, there are free guided tours; check the website for times and dates.
