National Museum of Modern Art (MOMAT)

Tokyo's National Museum of Modern Art covers art from the Meiji period (1868–1912) onward – after Japan opened up to the west – and exhibitions impart a sense of how modern Japan (and the modern Japanese aesthetic) developed through painting, photography, sculpture and video works. Don't miss the "Room with a View" for a panorama of the Imperial Palace East Garden. The museum closes in between exhibitions.
