Listasafn Íslands, National Gallery of Iceland, Reykjavik.

Stop in at the National Gallery of Iceland (listasafn.is; adult/child 2400kr/free), a pretty stack of marble atriums and spacious galleries overlooking Tjörnin. Its ever-changing exhibits draw from a fascinating 15,000-piece collection and it hosts the occasional international show. The museum can only display a small sample at any one time and exhibitions range from 19th- and 20th-century paintings by Iceland’s favorite artists (including Jóhannes Kjarval and Nína Sæmundsson) to sculptures by Sigurjón Ólafsson and others. Admission also includes rotating exhibits and the interdisciplinary Resistance show at the museum's House of Collections .

In their stewardship of the Ásgrímur Jónsson Collection and home, the museum sometimes offer shows and events at Jónsson's former atelier. Iceland’s first professional painter, Jónsson (1876–1958) was the son of a farmer and his work incorporates folk tales and Icelandic nature.
